Newcastle Boys Win District Track Championship!
Girls Team Takes Third!
April 24, 2009
Newcastle Bobcat track coach, Brad Wilkinson, sat alone on the top bleacher of Jayton Jaybird stadium waiting quietly for the final team results to be announced. He was pretty confident up until the final event, the boys 1600 relay. Thinking that his boys team may have just slipped into second place due to a disqualification for dropping the baton as the final leg crossed the finish line, Coach Wilkinson’s relief and satisfaction was visible when the announcement was made, “With 109 points the 2009 district 11-A boys track champion is Newcastle High School”.
This was no ordinary district championship for the Bobcats. The newly aligned district 11-A contained 13 high schools and several of them were known for their strength in track and field events. There were the usual strong competitors from Throckmorton, Woodson and Bryson but this year there were a few new faces that consistently send young men and women to the state track and field finals – Rule, Jayton, Knox City, Guthrie and Aspermont to name a few. No. This was no ordinary district championship because when the final points were totaled the closest team to the Bobcats were the Knox City Greyhounds with 86 points. If not for the disqualification, the Bobcats would have dominated the district 11-A track and field meet!
The Newcastle LadyCats third place finish with 72 points was pretty amazing also due to the fact that only 10 girls claim membership on this LadyCat team! They have consistently placed in the top 3 at their 2009 track meets against some very stiff competition.
