LadyCats Maintain 1st Place Position

Bobcats Lose Another Close One by 2 Points!

by Gordon Grubbs

February 01, 2010

The Newcastle LadyCats maintained their first place position tied with the Strawn Lady Greyhounds by defeating the Lingleville Lady Cardinals by a score of 82-35.  The LadyCats spoiled the homecoming game for the Lady Cardinals by pumping in 22 points in each of the first two quarters and then coasting on in with a 47 point margin of victory!  This win sets up the BIG district game of the season when the Strawn Lady Greyhounds coming visiting Tuesday night, February 2nd.  The Lady Greyhounds handed the LadyCats their only district loss of the season and it's payback time for the LadyCats!!  A win over Strawn would not totally seal the deal for the LadyCats because the last game of the district season is against the Lady Longhorns from Gordon who defeated the Lady Greyhounds by 16 points!!

The LadyCats had 4 girls in double figures Friday night at Lingleville with Haily Kramer on top with a whopping 21 points!  The LadyCat next in line for scoring doesn't even start but Amy Clayborn's three 3 pointers added up quickly for a total of 16 points.  Kimberly Bell contributed 13 points and Tara Evans had 10.  Courtney Bailey and Darcy Lewelling made 6 points; Courtney Spitzer and Latisha Short put in 4 and Jenna Evans had 2 points.  It was a great night for the LadyCats but now it's time to put that victory behind us and focus totally on the Lady Greyhounds!  There's just something about that name that brings shivers down my spine - Greyhounds!  This is our year and I hope all of the Newcastle LadyCat supporters will come out Tuesday night and pack the gym to show the LadyCats you are behind them!

The Bobcats need your support for a little different reason!!  The Bobcats have let two of the last three games slip through their grasp by two measly points each!  The 2 point loss Friday night with Lingleville - 42-44 - was a little different than the 2 point loss to Huckabay.  The Bobcats took a 5 point lead into the 4th quarter Friday night versus Lingleville and went very cold and let the Cardinals outscore them 16-9 to steal the win!  Now the Bobcats are in a position of having to win out the remainder of the district games to secure a place in the playoffs!  There is no reason why this can't happen but it will take a lot of focus by the Bobcats and some consistent scoring through all four quarters of each game.

Casey Terrell was the high point scorer for the Bobcats Friday night with 18 points followed by Brandon Bailey with 12.  Nik Libby added 4 and our two Cody's (Coop and Lowe) scored 3 points each.  Paul Martinez got in the book with a single 2 pointer.

The games Tuesday night versus Strawn are very important for both Newcastle teams so everyone please come out and enjoy watching these student athletes do their very best to represent our school and our community.  They have worked hard all year long and they need your support.  Girls game starts at 6:30 with boys game to follow.
