Bobcats Snatch Homecoming Victory from Rule!
Newcastle 64 - Rule 14
September 30, 2009
Ex-students and Newcastle Bobcat supporters filled the football stadium Friday night for this 2009 Homecoming game with the Rule Bobcats. Rule is always a formidable opponent and by observing their athletes during warm-ups it appeared that this would be a very close game and would be the Bobcats first full 40 minutes of football. But that's not what the Newcastle Bobcats had in mind.
This game was a little different than most of our other games because the Bobcat scoring was kicked off with a nice pass and catch by Brandon Bailey and Jason Thomas! This duo would team up again later for an absolutely beautiful 20 yard pass and touchdown catch. Jason ran his route right down through the middle and in mid-stride Brandon hit him and Jason just kept right on going! Wow - a thing of beauty. Ryan Bohannon and Wade Spitzer also caught touchdown passes from Brandon Bailey before the evening was over. Most of our scores have come from the rushing side of the statistics but not on this night. I think the Bobcats passing game provided a balanced attack that the Rule Bobcats were not quite prepared for. The balance came from Justin Bohannon and his 133 yards of rushing and his three touchdowns. Justin just keeps getting better and better at getting outside and turning that corner and out running his defensive opponents. It is also so nice to see the lead blocks that he is getting to clear his way. Dakota Lowe came in on offense a little later in the game and absolutely destroyed the end or cornerback coming up to turn Justin back in. Brandon Bailey does the same thing when he lines up under center and Jason Thomas is doing a great job of blocking downfield from the end position.
Defensively, the Bobcats really excelled Friday night! The Rule Bobcats only gathered in 212 yards of total offense with 71 rushing yards and 141 passing yards. The Newcastle Bobcats also created some very valuable turnovers that resulted in points on the scoreboard. Brandon Bailey had the defensive game of his dreams with three pass interceptions and two of them for touchdowns! The first was a 55 yard touchdown interception and the final one was a 20 yard interception that ended the game with 5:44 left in the final quarter. Dakota Lowe recovered one of three fumbles by Rule and David Brockman was an absolute mad man out there on defense. He was everywhere with 10 tackles! Usually, 10 tackles would be the leader for the night, but as I said, this was a defensive dream game for Brandon Bailey who had 17 tackles!! David and Brandon had plenty of help from Wade Spitzer with 7 tackles, Paul Martinez with 6 tackles, Ryan Bohannon is becoming a defensive standout with 5 tackles, Shane Potter and Jewel Jackson added 4 speed rush tackles, Dakota Lowe had 3, Cody Lowe had 2 and Justin Bohannon made 1 tackle.
Taylor Lewis is our kicker extrordinaire and he made 5 out of 7 extra point kicks. Those 10 points are very important when it comes to 45ing your opponent!
I started to say that the Bobcats get a week off due to an open date this Friday but I assure you that Coach Spitzer and Wilkinson are not giving them a week off! They are working hard preparing for that first district game October 9th at Crowell! Crowell is a very good, ranked 6-man team and will give our Bobcats all they can handle! Come out and support the junior high and junior varsity Bobcats this Thursday, October 1st when they face Strawn and then travel to Crowell October 9th and help the Bobcats kickoff their run for a district championship!
